We are proud to present the first male winner for our segment, Mr. Michael Kuluva – designer and founder of Tumbler and Tipsy. Growing up in Los Angeles where he currently resides, Michael was a competitive figure skater for nearly 20 years before he decided to leave the sport and dive into the fashion world. His drive and ambition on the ice clearly carried over into the innovative pieces that Michael has become known for among celebrities including Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Lance Bass, David Arquette, and Olympic skater Tara Lipinski. We love Michael’s vibrant personality and creativity!

What does fashion mean to you?

It is an embodiment of art and my own personal style.

Where do you get your inspiration?

As a pro figure skater for 20 years,  I was able to travel to several different countries so I get inspiration from the things that I have seen all around the world. I also get it from the underground scene – artists like Lil Debbie and Kreayshawn.

Do you consider yourself an artist?

Absolutely, because I take inspiration from everywhere and make it into something that is completely my own.

What is your greatest accomplishment?

It’s hard to say because there are so many things – being in Italian Vogue, getting invited to NYFW for 3 consecutive seasons, my brand becoming a corporation and sold internationally, signing with CAA (Creative Artists Agency). I guess the biggest would be partnering up with Ubisoft – the company who created “Just Dance”. I was the first designer ever to bring a virtual video game to the real life runway.

What are some of your biggest challenges?

Budgeting and trying to keep the company running in this economy. Competition in this industry is very high so always trying to reinvent your brand but stay true to yourself and your designs at the same time can be challenging. This economy has been a good opportunity to experiment, but with things beginning to improve I am starting to go back toward traditional styles and things that I know have worked for me in the past.

Who are your top three favorite designers?

Karl Lagerfeld, Marc Jacobs, and John Galliano

What do you do when you’re not blogging or working?

Play with my English bulldog Cooper, shop at Chanel, hang out with friends, visit museums, and relax at my home in Palm Springs

Three words that describe your style:

Fun, party, and magical

Any future projects or pieces we should look out for?

Yes! I will be doing a denim collection collaboration with Lil Debbie and designing a Trevor Wayne bow tie which will be sold on Fab.com in May.

Advice for other bloggers or fashion business owners?

Be persistent if it is something that you really want. Keep going, keep pushing.
